CHOOSING OUR TRIP
So now onto the trip itself and how we picked the one we did.
My husband, Lewis, wanted to travel either on a sailboat with just the two of us or me on the back of his motorcycle. Even though we have bare boat chartering licenses, I did not want to be in the middle of the ocean alone. I for one did not want to wake up one day to see a pirate standing over us and telling us to walk the plank. I read too many novels it would seem. I also, did not want to see the world as a blear and blink and not remember what country I was just in. I will also have to admit that I am afraid to be on the back or even the front of a motorcycle. I am afraid of getting hurt. Lewis does not understand why after all I have been through I would be afraid of getting hurt. He has a point, however, I think I am afraid, because I know just how much pain a person can actually be in.
Hard for me to justify doing something that can cause you pain when you can avoid it. Going back to the trip, I wanted a base: I wanted to live in a country and have one location that we could use as a base, a place to leave my luggage, get comfortable, a place to return to when you are tired and need to unwind, and to use that base to feel what it would be like to live in that country. And from that base to see the rest of what the country has to offer.
So Lewis being the love of my life since I was 17 went on a search to find just what I wanted.
He found this organization that we chose to take our one year sojourn with. It is called Remote Year.
It places us in an apartment and/or house to be shared with others in each country. The living quarters will be vetted, everything will work, the lights will turn on, the stove will work, the internet will be usable, the neighborhood will be safe and in a good location and all the research and work has been done for us. It also has a 24/7 work space within walking distance of the apartment. It will have everything we need to work remotely, which means we can stay in touch with our friends and family throughout our travels. This program is made for Digital Nomads. That should clue you in to the fact that the majority of the people who will be attending this trip with us will most likely be in their late to mid 20’s and 30’s. Before we decided to go on this trip we talked to a couple, who are in our age bracket, who attended a year long trip who said that they loved every minute of it and did not feel out of place due to the age discrepancy. We also, went to Medellin in Colombia and went to a party that was given by Remote Year, it was to celebrate the end of their 11 month of traveling together and moving onto their last month of travel. The comradely was infectious. There was a women in her 70’s who stated that this trip was the best thing she has ever done in her life. She said that she was fully welcomed in the group and not made to feel as if she was an outsider due to her age. She had a fantastic time and said that she would tell anyone young or old that they should not hesitate on going on a trip like this.
